In the wake of the uniquely entertaining ‘Chup’, director R. Balki returns, this time with a darker sports drama. The question remains: does Balki’s magic continue to captivate?
Story:
“Ghoomer” chronicles the journey of Anina (Saiyami Kher), a cricket prodigy whose hopes for selection in the Indian Cricket Team are shattered after a devastating accident costs her right hand. As she believes her dreams are dashed, Paddy (Abhishek Bachchan), a former failed cricketer, steps in to help her rebuild her confidence and chase her dreams of entering the Indian Cricket Team as a bowler. The film follows whether Anina can overcome her obstacles to realize her aspirations.
Writing and Direction:
While the movie adheres to the standard sports drama template, Balki injects a sinister twist in the pre-climax, delving into darker depths. This testament to his writing prowess sets “Ghoomer” apart. The audience suspends disbelief, surrendering to Balki’s compelling screenplay. Under his deft direction, the movie becomes immersive, particularly post the accident scene. Balki shapes Anina’s tragedy poignantly, and the training episodes prove inspiring and engaging. The climax is a rewarding emotional crescendo, inducing a heartfelt response.
Performances:
Sayami Kher’s portrayal of Anina is remarkable, capturing her character’s blend of confidence and vulnerability. Her performance in the training sequences is particularly earnest. Abhishek Bachchan excels as Paddy, embodying the character’s tumultuous journey from a downtrodden alcoholic to aspiring success. Bachchan skillfully portrays a spectrum of emotions, from pain and guilt to rage and redemption. “Paddy” becomes a standout character in his filmography.
Technicalities and Other Departments:
Vishal Sinha’s cinematography shines, especially in the movie’s darker moments. Lighting, shadows, and blocking intensify the atmosphere, enhancing the experience. Amit Trivedi’s music is strong, featuring his signature melodic compositions. Nishan Ashok Gupta’s editing maintains crispness in the 2-hour and 15-minute runtime.
Positives:
- Stellar Performances by Sayami Kher and Abhishek Bachchan
- Potent Drama in the Second Half
- Intriguing Pre-Climax Twist
Negatives:
- Predictable Story Template
- Slow Start
Verdict: “Ghoomer” is an inspiring sports drama that skillfully evokes strong emotions. Despite adhering to a familiar template, its exceptional performances and intense storytelling create a compelling watch.
