Hari, who’s great at making crowd-pleasing movies, is teaming up with Vishal again for an action-packed flick called Rathnam. They’ve had two big hits together before with Bharani and Pooja. Let’s see if they can score a hat trick with Rathnam!

Story :

Rathnam, played by Vishal, is a trusted friend of Chittoor MLA Panneer Swamy, portrayed by Samuthirakani. He often finds himself caught up in various conflicts. One day, he spots Mallika, played by Priya Bhavani Shankar, and becomes intrigued, deciding to keep an eye on her. Soon, Rathnam discovers that some thugs are after Mallika with harmful intentions. Determined to keep her safe, Rathnam leaps into action to protect her from harm.

But who are these thugs, and why are they targeting Mallika? Rathnam’s story revolves around uncovering the truth behind this dangerous situation and why Rathnam chooses to put himself in harm’s way to safeguard Mallika.

Positive Aspect :

Vishal always nails his performances, and Rathnam is no exception. He brings real depth to his role with total dedication. Especially in the action scenes, he shines brightly. Vishal’s body language is spot-on, and he carries the whole movie effortlessly.

The film packs some great action scenes, well thought out and sure to please the crowd. Priya Bhavani Shankar and Samuthirakani also do a good job in their roles. Devi Sri Prasad’s music in Rathnam is classic, taking us back to his early days. A couple of songs are particularly well-crafted, hitting the right notes just like he used to.

Negative Aspects :

Hari’s films usually follow a certain pattern, but what sets them apart is how he tells the story. Even with familiar plots, he’s managed to keep us entertained in the past by keeping things moving quickly. However, Rathnam doesn’t quite capture that magic. The storytelling doesn’t grip us like it should, and there are many parts that feel dull, slowing down the pace.

Without the entertainment factor, it’s easier to notice the flaws. The second half is packed with action but lacks the drama to balance it out, which can become tiring. The movie drags towards the end, and some scenes could have been trimmed down by the editing team. The director tries to inject a different emotion into the main characters, but it doesn’t quite hit the mark. Since the whole film relies on this emotion, it’s hard for us to connect with it. While there are a few funny moments, Yogi Babu’s potential isn’t fully utilized, and Murali Sharma’s role feels underdeveloped.

Technical Elements :

Devi Sri Prasad really came through for the film, both with the songs and the background score. Sukumar’s cinematography is clean, and there’s one impressive five-minute action scene shot in a single take. The production design is solid too. However, the editing falls short, making the film feel too drawn out.

Director Hari’s work on Rathnam is disappointing. He struggled to create engaging moments, which affects many scenes in the movie. An action film without strong emotions is like a body without a soul. That’s precisely the issue with Rathnam.

Conclusion :

Overall, Rathnam is a letdown as an action drama because it doesn’t deliver the right emotions. While Vishal does a commendable job in his action-packed role, and there are some impressive action scenes, the main emotion driving the story falls flat. This is the film’s major flaw.

Additionally, the usual entertainment and fast-paced storytelling that we expect from Hari are absent. The climax feels unnecessarily stretched out, making it feel like a slog after a while. So, it’s probably best to consider other movie options for this weekend.
