“Kushi,” a recent release, had generated immense anticipation, primarily due to its captivating soundtrack. Starring Vijay Deverakonda and Samantha, this rom-com was extensively promoted. Directed by Shiva Nirvana, known for his heartwarming films like “Majili” and “Ninnu Kori,” the film hit theaters today. Let’s dive into the review.

Synopsis:

Viplav (Vijay Deverakonda), an employee at BSNL, falls head over heels for Aaradhya (Samantha) from the moment he lays eyes on her. However, Aaradhya pretends to be a Pakistani Muslim to keep Viplav at bay. As fate would have it, Aaradhya eventually falls for Viplav and confesses her true identity as hailing from a conservative Brahmin family. Unbeknownst to them, their fathers, Lenin Satyam (Sachin Khedekar) and Chadarangam Srinivasa Rao (Murali Sharma), are sworn enemies. Against their parents’ wishes, Viplav and Aaradhya tie the knot, setting the stage for unexpected challenges in their married life. The film revolves around how they navigate these hurdles.

Pros:

“Kushi” doesn’t explore groundbreaking themes, but it delves into the ordinary and petty issues that arise in relationships. The second half handles these with a lighthearted touch, accompanied by excellent music and stunning visuals.

The interactions between the lead characters in the latter half will resonate with family audiences, shining a spotlight on where the film truly excels. While the scenarios may not be groundbreaking, they are convincingly portrayed. Vijay Deverakonda’s performance as Viplav is outstanding, as he effortlessly sheds his mass image and embraces his character’s requirements. He exudes charisma throughout the film, displaying impeccable comedic timing and delivering in pivotal scenes.

Samantha, the star actress, shines in “Kushi.” She is delightful and performs with finesse, sharing excellent on-screen chemistry with Vijay Deverakonda. Her portrayal of emotional sequences is effortless, and the film successfully balances fun and emotions in the latter half. Supporting actors such as Sharanya, Murali Sharma, Rohini, Sharanya Pradeep, Sachin Khedekar, and Rahul Ramakrishna deliver commendable performances.

Cons:

The film becomes somewhat predictable as it progresses, diminishing its impact to some extent. With the audience able to anticipate what happens next, the film occasionally loses its edge. The Kerala episode could have been executed more effectively.

The movie’s length and pacing could have benefited from some trimming. The Kashmir segments, in particular, felt a tad extended and could have been streamlined. The first half lacks momentum, with the film truly finding its stride just before the intermission. Despite director Shiva Nirvana’s claim that the film addresses a sensitive issue, it fails to introduce a truly novel perspective and instead evokes comparisons with other films.

Technical Aspects:

Hesham Abdul Wahab’s music emerges as the unsung hero of “Kushi.” The songs are outstanding, complemented by captivating cinematography by Murali, which elevates the overall viewing experience. The film boasts impressive production values, courtesy of Mythri Movie Makers. However, the editing could have been more meticulous.

Director Shiva Nirvana deserves credit for his work on “Kushi.” He opts for a simple concept that resonates with married couples and presents it in his signature style. Shiva Nirvana’s films consistently explore relatable life issues, and “Kushi” fits comfortably within that category. The film benefits from a strong cast and solid technical expertise.

Verdict:

“Kushi” is an endearing romantic comedy with a strong second half. The heart of the film unfolds in the latter part, brimming with engaging drama and emotions. Vijay Deverakonda and Samantha deliver charming performances, supported by a talented ensemble cast. However, the initial portions of the film fall short. Additionally, a shorter runtime could have enhanced the film’s impact. Nevertheless, Shiva Nirvana crafts a movie that strikes a chord with family audiences, making “Kushi” a worthwhile watch for the weekend.
