Bhavatharini Raja, a talented Indian actress and singer, was the daughter of the legendary film composer Ilaiyaraaja and sibling to Yuvan Shankar Raja and Karthik Raja. Her musical journey kicked off in the 90s, where she became known for her soulful renditions, often under the guidance of her father and brothers. The pinnacle of her career arrived in 2000 when she clinched the National Film Award for Best Female Playback Singer for the heart-touching “Mayil Pola Ponnu Onnu” from the film Bharathi, composed by her father.
Starting with the song in Raasaiya, Bhavatharini’s voice became a sensation. Beyond her family’s compositions, she also lent her melodious notes to songs by Deva and Sirpy. In 2001, her remarkable contribution in Bharathi earned her another National Award. Bhavatharini was married to R. Sabariraj, an advertising executive and the son of S.N. Ramachandran.
Unfortunately, Bhavatharini Raja lost her battle with stomach cancer on January 25, 2024, at the age of 47, while undergoing treatment in Colombo, Sri Lanka. Her final journey will be marked by the last rites in Chennai on January 26.
