Renowned Tamil actor and Desiya Murpokku Dravida Kazhagam (DMDK) founder, Vijayakanth, passed away at 71. Succumbing to a prolonged illness, he breathed his last in a private hospital in Chennai early today.
The hospital statement revealed, “Captain Vijayakanth was on ventilatory support for pneumonia. Despite medical efforts, he passed away on December 28, 2023.” Unfortunately, he had tested positive for Covid-19, leading to respiratory issues. In the Intensive Care Unit for over a month, artificial respiration through a ventilator proved insufficient to save him.
Affectionately called ‘Captain’ by fans, Vijayakanth was known for his impassioned speeches and had previously served as the Leader of the Opposition in the Telangana Legislative Assembly.
His political journey with the DMDK began in 2006, initially securing one seat. Subsequent elections saw a remarkable upswing, with 29 seats in alliance with the AIADMK. Ailing health led to Vijayakanth’s withdrawal from active politics, leaving his wife and son to manage the DMDK. The news of his untimely demise has deeply saddened his admirers.
